Meet George, Gillian Higgins’ anatomical painted horse, displayed at the Horses Inside Out Conference which I attended last weekend. Inspired by George Stubbs an English painter, best known for his paintings of horses. Self-trained, Stubbs learnt his skills independently from other great artists of the 18th century such as Reynolds and Gainsborough. Stubbs’ output includes history paintings, but his greatest skill was in painting animals, perhaps influenced by his love and study of anatomy. Whilst researching my family tree on my Grandmother’s side, it looks like George Stubbs is an ancestor- this could explain all the artists in my family. Gillian’s exquisite commission of George (over 200 hours of painting) will be part of the George Stubbs exhibition at Normanby Hall Country Park, North Lincolnshire, which opens in March 2024 marking 300 years since the birth of the famous equine artist George Stubbs.
